1977 Pontiac Car Book

Born in 1971, I was six-years-old in 1977 and my interest in cars was a big as it could be for a little kid. Frequently, my Dad would take me to car dealerships to walk around and look at the beautiful new cars. As a memento, we'd take home some of the promotional booklets, and over time, I gathered quite a collection of "car books" in the late 1970s. I likely scribbled on many of them with crayons and most are gone, but this one booklet promoting the line of 1977 Pontiac models survived!

On this page I snapped a photo of every page from that book.

1977 Pontiac Car Booklet Notice near the end how they mention how great the Bonnevilles, Catalinas, Firebirds and Grand Prixs are ... but what about those oh-so-amazing Venturas, Astres and Sunbirds? ;)
1977 Pontiac Grand Prix

1977 Pontiac Grand Prix

By 1977, the body style of the Grand Prix (shared by the Chevrolet Monte Carlo) had grown old and stale. When this new body came out in 1973, it was attractive car. But year after year, the car had the same ol' body with similar tail lights.

Only the 1973 model interests me if I had to plunk down money and time on a mid-1970s Grand Prix as a classic car collector.

The Firebird. Love the trendy style of having a huge bird on the hood. (See the commercial at the bottom of the page.)

Question: Am I the only one who thinks the dashboard looks ugly? My goodness, is that an industrial silver stitch design? And the steering wheel looks cheap and unstylish.

1977 Pontiac Bonneville

1977 Pontiac Bonneville

Charming full-size luxury vehicle for its day.

1977 Pontiac Sunbird

The cars on the first three pages were decent enough, at least compared to its competitors of the era. Then things get kind of ugly ...

1977 Pontiac Sunbird

Just a hideous vehicle. Not quite an economy car. Definitely not a sports car. I'm not sure who this car appealed to.

1977 Pontiac Astre

1977 Pontiac Astre

Nooooooo! It's a Chevrolet Vega turned into a Pontiac.

Aside from its reputation for breakdowns and being unreliable, I like the name "Astre." Also, the front headlights and front grill are designed with some Pontiac flair, but that's as far as I'll go. From the back, the Astre looked like a really boring hatchback. You were not trying to impress anyone if you owned this vehicle.

1977 Pontiac Lemans

1977 Pontiac Lemans

Yawn! Your typical mid-sized car from the mid-to-late 1970s. I guess it's attractive in some ways. It reminds me of my father's uninspiring 1973 Buick Century, which I suspect may have used the same body as the mid-1970s Lemans.

But wait, it gets worse. Much worse ...

1977 Pontiac Ventura

1977 Pontiac Ventura

This might be the ugliest General Motors car of the 1970s. The Pontiac Ventura brought new meaning to the term "boring rectangle".

And yes, this is the same dull body shell that was also used by the Chevrolet Nova, Oldsmobile Omega and Buick Skylark models. Awful. Dreadful.

1977 Pontiac Station Wagon

1977 Pontiac Grand Safari Station Wagon

In 1977, the station wagon was completely redesigned. Not a bad vehicle. And I'm a big fan of station wagons.

My main beef: Look at the photo directly below of a 1987 Pontiac Station Wagon ...

Do you see any major differences from the back? Neither do I. How pathetic!

TV commerical for the 1977 Grand Prix. Hmmmmm. How can a car be priced at $0000? :)
